Sunnah fasting guide

The virtues and times of Sunnah fasting

Sunnah fasting lifts the spirit, purifies body and heart, and brings great reward, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

White days fast (Ayyam al-Beed)

The 13th, 14th and 15th of every lunar month. The Prophet ﷺ said: «Fasting three days of every month is like fasting for a lifetime» (Sahih Bukhari & Muslim).

Monday & Thursday

The Prophet ﷺ was asked about fasting on Monday and Thursday and said: «Deeds are presented to Allah on Monday and Thursday, and I love that my deeds are presented while I am fasting» (Tirmidhi).

⭐
Day of Arafah (9 Dhul-Hijjah)

For those not performing Hajj, fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year (Sahih Muslim).

Day of Ashura (10 Muharram)

Fasting the 10th of Muharram (together with the 9th, Tasu'a) expiates the sins of the previous year (Sahih Muslim).

Six days of Shawwal

After Eid al-Fitr, fasting six days of Shawwal together with Ramadan earns the reward of fasting a whole year (Sahih Muslim).

The month of Sha'ban

The Prophet ﷺ fasted most often in Sha'ban, preparing body and heart for the great month of Ramadan.

Calculated with the tabular method (civil epoch, mean synodic month); dates may differ by 1–2 days from actual crescent sighting in each region.
